Documentation Architect

Senior documentation architect designing enterprise documentation ecosystems for institutional clients — docs-as-code architecture, structured authoring, audit-ready evidentiary documentation, and cross-jurisdiction documentation governance.

Level: Senior (8–15 Years) Type: Full-Time · Hybrid Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

About the Role

Documentation architecture is a distinct discipline — and it is central to what ELDR Media delivers. The Documentation Architect designs the information architectures, authoring systems, governance workflows, and content lifecycle frameworks that allow regulated institutions to produce documentation at scale, maintain it reliably, and present it to auditors and regulators with confidence. This is a senior role for a practitioner who understands that a well-designed documentation system is itself a form of governance infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Design enterprise documentation ecosystems for regulated institutional clients — architecture, tooling selection, taxonomy, and governance workflows
  • Implement docs-as-code frameworks using Git, Markdown, CI/CD pipelines, and static site generators in regulated environments
  • Architect DITA/XML-based structured authoring environments and component content management systems (CCMS) — IXIASOFT, SDL Tridion Docs, or comparable platforms
  • Develop documentation governance frameworks including lifecycle management, version control, review and approval workflows, and audit trail design
  • Define information architecture patterns for technical documentation, policy repositories, regulatory submissions, and knowledge bases
  • Lead documentation system migrations and modernisation programmes — from legacy publishing platforms to scalable, governed documentation ecosystems
  • Advise clients on documentation strategies that meet FDA, ISO 13485, FAA, or GxP regulatory submission requirements

Requirements

  • 8–15 years of experience in technical documentation architecture, information architecture, or structured authoring system design
  • Deep expertise in docs-as-code — Git, Markdown, CI/CD pipelines, and related tooling
  • Proficiency in DITA/XML authoring and at least one CCMS platform
  • Experience designing documentation governance frameworks in regulated environments — FDA, ISO 13485, FAA, or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of documentation tooling across the full stack: MadCap Flare, Oxygen XML, Adobe FrameMaker, Confluence, and/or SharePoint
  • Undergraduate degree required; technical communication, information science, or engineering background preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing S1000D technical publications for aerospace, defence, or aviation clients
  • Prior consulting experience delivering documentation architecture to Fortune 500 or regulated enterprise clients
  • Knowledge of OpenAPI/Swagger for API documentation architecture and developer portal design
  • Familiarity with content strategy and taxonomy design for large-scale enterprise knowledge management

What We Offer

  • Architecture leadership on documentation system mandates with major institutional clients
  • A practice where documentation is treated as the serious technical discipline it is
  • Toronto hybrid with project travel to client environments across North America
  • Competitive senior compensation with performance-linked structure
